The Queenslander.
The traditional timber Queenslander home is seeing a return in popularity owing to their simple timber design and construction, and more and more people are appreciating the timeless appeal of living in a home that oozes the character and warmth of a character home.
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s many timber Queenslanders were designed and built, ranging from the standard 4 room workers cottage to large and majestic high set homes.
As time went on the desire for affordable Queensland homes saw the large verandahs created into small rooms.
Queensland homes are built primarily of timber, although some of the more modern incarnation can steel framed. They can be high (2m plus) or low-set, one to two storeys and built on timber or steel stumps. All have one or more verandas and are designed for the Queensland climate with large open verandahs, internal breezeways for cross ventilation.
Typically, in classic Queenslander design the roof is constructed of corrugated iron available in a multitude of colours.
There is a lot of opportunity to purchase old Queenslanders from ‘holding yards’, where the house has been removed from a location and parked awaiting it to be purchased by new owners who wish to transport their classic Queenslander to a new location.
Additionally, many people purchase an old workers cottage in some of Brisbane’s suburbs that are well known for being Queenslander enclaves. Such suburbs as Ashgrove, Red Hill, Paddington, Chermside, Chelmer, Graceville and Bardon are well known and are a favourite spot for Queenslander renovation projects.
